• Afghanistan, Parwan: The Kabul government and intelligence forces (NDS) have long supported local militias and the warlords who control them.
The militiamen do not like groups to be defined as militias, they prefer the definition of “uprising people”.
Abdulbasir Salangi, former governor of Parwan, says: “These groups are made up of ordinary people who have taken up arms to defend their families and their lives. Some of us have already fought in the past, we were leading normal lives but events forced us to go back to war.
We have a duty to defend our people from the risks created by the withdrawal of troops and by other countries trying to interfere with Afghan affairs, such as Pakistan". Alessio Romenzi

“Defending our valleys is like defending our people. For us it has the same value. It is our way of opposing regional actors’ attempt to occupy our spaces by supporting the terrorists."
Salangi argues that after the withdrawal of the troops, the citizens had no choice.
"It is a consequence of the American withdrawal, I speak as a leader of a militia and as a parliamentarian. I believe in this government and I believe in my people. We have seen that in some provinces the forces of the army have not been enough. And then the citizens took up arms again". Alessio Romenzi

While preparing to descend from the mountains, a soldier shouts: "The war is not over, whoever wanted to win it has gone, leaving us alone to fight it" on August 7, 2021. The men who formed the militia in the Shinwari Mountains are of various ages and social backgrounds. There are shopkeepers and pastors, students and retirees.
Leaders argue that only by representing all parts of society can the protection and trust of the community truly be guaranteed.
