  • Afghanistan, Parwan: In recent months, thousands of civilians have joined various militias to fight the advance of the Taliban.<br />
On the day of our visit, last August 6, a meeting was held in the mountains of Shinwari between Abdulbasir Salangi, former governor of Parwan, Abdul Zahir Salangi, member of Parliament of the province of Parwan and leader of the resistance forces of the area and Abdul Qadir Salangi, responsible for the ten check posts in the area.<br />
The purpose of the meeting was to plan a strategy to stem the Taliban advance and protect the roads leading to the capital. Alessio Romenzi

  • Afghanistan, Parwan: The Kabul government and intelligence forces (NDS) have long supported local militias and the warlords who control them.<br />
The militiamen do not like groups to be defined as militias, they prefer the definition of “uprising people”.<br />
Abdulbasir Salangi, former governor of Parwan, says: “These groups are made up of ordinary people who have taken up arms to defend their families and their lives. Some of us have already fought in the past, we were leading normal lives but events forced us to go back to war.<br />
We have a duty to defend our people from the risks created by the withdrawal of troops and by other countries trying to interfere with Afghan affairs, such as Pakistan". Alessio Romenzi
    ROA210807070.jpg
  • Afghanistan, Parwan: Militia leaders explain that the attacks take place mostly at night.<br />
“There are also 50 people arriving at night. The last time was three days ago but we managed to maintain our positions.<br />
We have received information that they are preparing attacks, so we are preparing our men ” says Abdulbasir Salangi. Alessio Romenzi

  • Afghanistan, Parwan: Abdul Zahir Salangi, (center with white scarf) is a Parwan member parliament and also leader of the militia.<br />
“Defending our valleys is like defending our people. For us it has the same value. It is our way of opposing regional actors’ attempt to occupy our spaces by supporting the terrorists."<br />
Salangi argues that after the withdrawal of the troops, the citizens had no choice.<br />
"It is a consequence of the American withdrawal, I speak as a leader of a militia and as a parliamentarian. I believe in this government and I believe in my people. We have seen that in some provinces the forces of the army have not been enough. And then the citizens took up arms again". Alessio Romenzi

  • Afghanistan, Parwan: Militia leaders criticise the conduct of the American administration.<br />
"The withdrawal of the troops strengthened the enemy rather than weakening him - says Abdul Zahir Salangi - and in the end they left us alone in the middle of the war, not at the end of the war". Alessio Romenzi
    ROA210807128.jpg
  • Afghanistan, Parwan: Many soldiers believe that it was a mistake to take away weapons from armed groups in the past and that only local militias can guarantee the security and control of the territory". Alessio Romenzi

  • Afghanistan, Parwan: Soldiers move military vehicles to escort leaders into the valleys.<br />
While preparing to descend from the mountains, a soldier shouts: "The war is not over, whoever wanted to win it has gone, leaving us alone to fight it" on August 7, 2021. The men who formed the militia in the Shinwari Mountains are of various ages and social backgrounds. There are shopkeepers and pastors, students and retirees.<br />
Leaders argue that only by representing all parts of society can the protection and trust of the community truly be guaranteed.<br />

“Taliban entered our houses turning them into their bases, we were trapped. We managed to escape but now we live like miserable people without water, with nothing to eat. We have seen our relatives and our neighbors die. And in the future we see no light! Alessio Romenzi
